In a previous blog post, we discussed configuring 5250 sessions in IBM i Access Client Solutions, but we did not touch on the multiple ways the sessions can be launched. IBM has provided startup programs that allow you to create shortcuts and launch a session in a single step. You can even create a .bat file that will execute an SQL statement to retrieve information from IBM i tables and place the results in a .xlsx spreadsheet file.

Have you started planning to convert from IBM i Access for Windows to the new Java version called IBM i Access Client Solutions? IBM has announced that support for IBM i Access for Windows will not extend beyond Windows 8.1. With Windows 10 being formally released in July, companies will begin the migration to the next version of the operating system, and computer manufacturers will start to ship new hardware with Windows 10.

With an upgrade to JDE World A9.3 comes some considerable changes to the security settings and systems. These changes can be absorbed in one “big bang,” they can also be taken in smaller increments, as legacy security is still supported. Some of the most noteworthy adjustments are a change in default settings, addition of role-based security, a new Security Workbench, and versions.

With all the tools that are available to assist the developer in his perpetual quest for knowledge, I’ve found that the Rational Developer, IBM’s WebSphere Development Studio client tool which is referred to as WDSc or RAD as of late, provides great advantages with a wealth of information at your fingertips.
