oracle-JDEA recent IBM article by Chacko Thomas addressed the three different kinds of JD Edwards Upgrades, Technical, Functional and Transformational, and the ways to differentiate between them. Thomas explained:

Technical upgrades involve migrating to and from the same infrastructure platform, analysis and implementation for RICE elements, low cost, and three upgrade delivery alternatives, among other things.

Functional upgrades include all the same aspects of Technical upgrades, plus configuration and process design of new functionality, separate fit/gap analysis and implementation for RICE elements, and including some change management impact.

A Transformational upgrade is a mix of functional and technical upgrades along with extensive business process modeling and technical design activities, new modules being implemented, increased complexity and, occasionally, may seem to be a form of re-implementation.

This post goes into more detail about each of these upgrade types. Of course, no upgrade is a cut and dry affair, with many different variables playing into the picture. For any JDE upgrade it is best to turn to a team of experts, such as our certified JD Edwards team.
