What an IBM i Health Check Reviews and Why It Matters

An IBM i Health Check reviews the condition of your system across performance, storage, backups, monitoring, security settings, and day-to-day operating practices. Its purpose is to show what is working as expected, where risk may be building, and what your team should address first.

For many IBM i teams, the question is not whether the platform is stable. It is whether the surrounding controls, documentation, ownership, and recovery practices are strong enough to support that stability over time.

What Is a Health Check for IBM i?

An IBM i Health Check is a structured review of the environment that helps teams identify operational risks, validate key controls, and prioritize what to address first.

Our goal is to give teams a clear baseline for next steps without disrupting normal operations.

What Operational Health Areas Are Reviewed?

An IBM i Health Check typically reviews the following operational areas:
  • Performance information, including CPU, memory, and disk utilization

  • Storage growth and IFS usage

  • Job activity and system workload information

  • Backup status, completeness, and the practices used to support recovery readiness

  • Monitoring coverage and escalation visibility

  • Security statistics, including password expiration settings and the number of disabled profiles

The review does not treat a single performance spike as a problem. Instead, it looks for recurring patterns that may indicate capacity, workload, or configuration concerns.

This information helps answer fundamental questions such as:

  • Is the system performing within expected ranges?

  • Are resources trending in a predictable and manageable way?

  • Are backups, monitoring, and core operational controls functioning as intended?

  • Do security statistics point to cleanup, ownership, or access-review needs?

The findings show whether the available system data supports the team’s current understanding of the environment.

How Governance and Risk Are Evaluated

Governance

Governance reviews focus on how the environment is managed, not just how it performs.  Strong operational performance does not eliminate risk. An IBM i environment can appear stable while still relying on informal processes, unclear ownership, or critical knowledge held by only a few people.

The Health Check also reviews how routine IBM i responsibilities are assigned, documented, and carried out. It looks at the governance practices that support audit readiness, lifecycle consistency, and day-to-day reliability. This includes how authority is assigned and reviewed, whether monitoring ownership and escalation paths are documented, how PTFs and maintenance are managed, and whether backup and recovery practices are clearly defined and periodically validated.

Governance problems are often overlooked when the system is running well. The Health Check helps document who owns key responsibilities and whether important operating procedures are defined and consistently followed to reduce
risk over time.

Risk

A stable IBM i environment can still carry significant risk if access reviews, backup validation, monitoring ownership, PTF maintenance, or recovery procedures are not clearly defined.

The Health Check compares system data with the procedures used to support the environment. This makes it easier to identify missing controls and decide what should be addressed first.

The report gives administrators specific items to address and gives management a concise summary of the risks that may require planning or investment.

How Briteskies Keeps the Process Noninvasive

The Health Check for IBM i is designed to be noninvasive. Briteskies gathers system-level information, configuration values, performance data, authority counts, storage trends, backup status, and recovery information without requiring changes to application logic or access to business transaction data.

That means the review is intended to assess the environment without interrupting normal processing or creating unnecessary disruption for the team managing the system.

Prioritized Findings and Recommendations

The final report identifies the findings, explains their importance, and recommends which items should be addressed first.

Findings are organized to help teams distinguish between near-term actions and longer-term improvements. Longer-term improvements may include PTF planning, stronger recovery practices, better documentation, clearer escalation paths, or additional IBM i support.

If additional help is needed, Briteskies can use the findings to help plan remediation work or ongoing IBM i support.

When to Consider a Health Check

An IBM i Health Check is often useful when the system seems to be running well, but documentation is incomplete, out of date, or key responsibilities are not clearly assigned. It can also help before an audit, a staffing change, an operating system upgrade, or a move to managed services.

Organizations often request a Health Check when questions exist around backup ownership, monitoring, recovery procedures, or day-to-day maintenance responsibilities.

A Health Check provides a point-in-time view of the IBM i environment. It can identify gaps and support planning, but it does not replace continuous monitoring, a formal audit, or recovery testing unless those activities are specifically included in the engagement.

Turning Findings Into Practical Next Steps

The purpose of the Health Check is to give your team a factual view of the IBM i environment and identify what may need attention first.

A future Health Check can compare current findings with earlier results. This can show whether known risks were addressed and whether system usage or support needs have changed over time.

About Briteskies

Briteskies helps organizations support, secure, and modernize IBM i (AS/400) environments. We provide consulting, development, security audits, EDI solutions, and integration services based on each client’s systems and priorities.

We also provide additional IBM i resources when a client needs specialized skills or help with a backlog. These resources work with the existing team while the client continues to direct priorities.

Our consultants have experience with IBM i, RPG, Node.js, APIs, and the applications connected to the platform. This allows Briteskies to address both the IBM i environment and the systems that exchange data with it
